Community Fibre Partnership update

In early 2021, Hunston Parish Council registered with the Community Fibre Partnership to establish to possibility of getting fibre to the premises for all properties within Hunston Village.

Unfortunately, having undertaken quite a few spot checks of the addresses within the quote developed by Open Reach. It appears that a large number of the premises are not eligible to benefit from funding as part of the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme. Whilst local Authorities in West Sussex top up the government scheme the terms and conditions are set by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). As part of the criteria premises can only benefit if they are considered a rural eligible premise and are not likely to be the beneficiaries of a commercial roll out as determined by a recent OFCOM review.

When entering a number of the premises on the DCMS Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme website to check their eligibility the following message appears “This address is not eligible for a voucher. Gigabit-capable broadband is rolling out rapidly across the UK and this area is likely to be covered by network providers as part of their commercial rollout, without government support. The voucher scheme only operates in areas that are out of scope of the commercial rollout and therefore most in need of government support.”

This is clearly disappointing news for residents. Should anything change with the scheme then the Parish Council will be in touch.
